Eudora 8.0.0b3 is a mail and news application based on the open source Thunderbird client from Mozilla.
Eudora, made by Qualcomm, changed dramatically from previous versions and now is moving to the open source trying to maintain maximum compatibility, for both developers and users, with Thunderbird.
Among the new features of this version is the skin of some windows like the Options and the Message Filters windows. The Add-ons is another great feature, clicking the Add-ons option on the Tools menus will show the Add-ons window like in Mozilla or Firefox web browser. Some add-ons available are the DOM Inspector and Penelope both already included in Eudora.
Now you can set up email accounts from Google and add news groups to received information from them.
Eudora adds the Google option to go directly to the Google website, it doesn’t matter which browser you are using Eudora allows you to configure the browser that you want.
Eudora options window now gives the user more control over the way that the messages are shown and notified. The Privacy option changed and some additional options were included like the Junk mail, the E-mail scams and the Anti-Virus now allows the antivirus programs to quarantine individual incoming messages.
  • Eudora offers several options to manage properly one or more e-mail accounts; this version is open source so many add-ons can be used.
  • This beta version has some issues upgrading from previous versions of Eudora. Some import features are not working properly.

What's new in version 7.1

A "Recent" submenu was added to both the Mailboxes and Transfer menus, and a
"Recent" folder was added to the Mailboxes window. These locations contain the
10 most recently used mailboxes. A mailbox goes to the beginning of the list
when its window is opened up. The number of mailboxes to appear on the list
can be changed by a setting in Tools->Options->Mailboxes. Changing the value of
the setting to zero will remove the feature.

Added the ability the play a wide variety of sound formats for the new mail
sound and for sounds in filters. New formats include MP3, MIDI, WMA, and even
the audio inside of video formats such as MPEG, WMV, and AVI. Added hidden
setting , which allows the current sound/video
assigned when new mail arrives or filter sound actions to show in a media
player window. The default value of the flags keeps the window hidden. To get
the player to show up use .

Added the ability to save search criteria via File->Save and open the search
criteria later via the menu arrow on the "Search" button. There is a new
"Find Messages Using" menu next to the "Find Messages" menu item to easily call
up one of the saved searches.

Added Edit->Insert->Downloable Picture (also added to the Insert Object button
of composition windows). This allows a link (e.g. http: or ftp:) to an image
to be inserted in to a composition message. This saves disk space because only
a URL reference to the image is sent instead of embedding the image file. Great
for signatures to include a link to company logo available on web site.

I'm a long-standing user of Eudora from verson 3.x onwards, and I now have what I regard as the FINAL version - 7.1.0.9. The so-called version 8 is simply NOT Eudora in anything other than name and some of the GUI cosmetic aspects. I tried it and not only couldn't it import my accounts and other data properly from my real Eudora settings but various of its features that were very conveniently at hand for me in real Eudora were hidden away and fiddly to find and use - and I noticed that the options available for me to set were very small in number as compared with real Eudora (i.e. up to v.7.1). So, from me a raspberry to the so-called Eudora 8, and I'll stay with Eudora 7.1.0.9 as long as it remains workable for me to do so.
Incidentally, when I upgraded recently from v.6.0.3 to 7.1.0.9 I was able to quickly find, via a Google listing, a clean, non-dodgy web page that gave a registration number with user names to enable one to use that final version of real Eudora in full 'paid' mode. It is fine to do that because Qualcomm have put the program effectively in the public domain and are not selling it any more - so there is no ethical issue about registering the program in that way.
